The first Sam Zuckerberg Scholarship for graduate students from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel was awarded to Anya Shani. Anya is now attending Oxford Brookes University, to pursue a full-time Master’s programme for this academic year.

The scholarship is made possible through the support of Roy J. Zuckerberg of the USA, in memory of his father Sam. Roy J. Zuckerberg is Emeritus Chairman of BGU’s Board of Governors. The scholarship covers fees, accommodation and some living expenses for one academic year.

Anya was born in Russia and, at the age of 1, immigrated to Israel with her mother. The two of them settled in Yavne'el, a small village in the northern part of Israel. “My mother married an Israeli man who adopted me when I was two years old,” Anya said when she heard she had been successful. “It's difficult to describe in one sentence how I feel about getting this opportunity. I'm so excited that words can't even begin to explain how I feel. I always had big ambitions for myself, but when you live in a small village you can't even imagine the possibility that you might get the opportunity to study somewhere like Oxford Brookes University. I appreciate and cherish it. I’m super-excited and I know that this year will be full of action and learning. I'm looking forward to it!”

Anya completed her BA in July 2014 in the Department of Hotel and Tourism Management at the Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management at BGU.
