There is a clear, growing need in Israel for professional sports management experts to acquire the necessary tools and skills for everyday work, through methodical training. While academic degree programs of this kind are available in other western countries, they do not exist in Israel as, up until now, sports directors tended to be ex-athletes or coaches with no relevant sports management training. It is most fitting that the Department of Management in the Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business & Management (GGFMB) at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev be the first to open this study track, as the GGFBM is at a discernible advantage, comprised of faculty members who not only embrace the traditional academic fields of management, but specialize in a variety of aspects of sports management research. In fact, the GGFBM has already been teaching an introductory module for the past 5 years, the feedback from which was the impetus to officially launch this revolutionary degree program in sports management. The graduates of this degree will overhaul the way in which sports directors manage this multi-faceted and important private and public enterprise, as well as inspire further research in this field.
