Ben-Gurion University of the Negev through its BGU Energy Initiative and University of Michigan through Michigan Memorial Phoenix Energy Institute maintain extensive programs in energy R&D.

The potential collaboration between the two institutions was explored during the visits of Prof. Moti Herskowitz to UM in 2010 and of a delegation from UM to BGU led by Prof. Steve Forrest.

The workshop that covers three topics: solar energy, solar fuels and thermo-electricity, was designed to facilitate and enhance collaborations. The workshop on Solar Fuels was organized under the auspices of I-CORE.
